skyrodemichor [I came up with this word via some etymological analysis. It means "the smell of concrete after rain."]

sylvurban [I came up with this word. It describes areas where manmade structures and nature meet in an interesting way, or where urban space/infrastructure and wilderness intersect. Think observing a murmuration from a highway overpass with noise pollution in the background, not a vegetable garden next to a house. Alternative form: sylvurbimarginal]

A deep dive into the DC Metro challenge

On Saturday, Aaron Landry and I completed the Metro Challenge. It entails passing through every single station in the Metro system in a single trip. This is an extremely detailed explanation of what it's really like to attempt and finish the DC Metro Challenge. It's also probably more than you ever wanted to know about the Metro Challenge, but here goes. A Washingtonian writer did the challenge recently , which is how this idea got in my head.  Here's an earlier preview post with some of my thoughts about the challenge prior to attempting it . All in all, it was an adventure. Though some people may not find the concept appealing at all, doing the Metro challenge may be of interest to those who like transit. National Building Museum: underwhelming

On Saturday, I went to the National Building Museum for the first time. Although it's not directly on the Mall, it's still pretty conveniently located just outside of Judiciary Square station or a short walk from Gallery Place/Verizon Center.  So getting there was no problem, and in fact, I've walked past the building a number of times when arriving or departing DC from Judiciary Square. Only today did I finally pay the museum a visit, enticed by the prospect of a group discount on the ticket price (usually $10; $5 per person at the group rate if you have at least 10 people. Thanks to GGWash for organizing the outing so we could all get the group discount.)  Being interesting in urban planning and architecture now, I'd been meaning to visit the Building Museum at some point, since it seemed like a natural fit for those interests. Interesting AI-generated words

 A bit of a detour from the usual after an unplanned hiatus. Brought to you by a new website I recently discovered, which generates new words based on AI. A good portion of the words themselves seem real enough, but the AI-generated definitions don't necessarily make much sense and are not etymologically accurate. Another feature of this website is producing AI-generated definitions of (real or fake) words you input.
